The Joys of Wearing a Costume in Everyday Life! – #9 of 50 Things That Help Me Heal (video)

Another gem from Live Action Role Playing ![]()
Here’s the basic deal — I have embraced all of my outfits as costumes.
Jeans and t-shirt = casual costume.
Flowing skirt and soft shirt = my beauty femme hippie costume.
Suit = get it done work mode costume.
I see what I wear as an externalization of my identity. So I play with it, let it shift, expand, and change.
Self growth comes from using this principle:
Try something totally different!
When I wear a costume, it brings out certain parts of me that might not always be visible. Wearing a costume can bring out something dormant within me, so I can say, “Hello self. I love YOU too!”
People view and read what you choose to wear, it’s true. Not bad or good, we are tracking and creating meaning almost constantly. Playing with costumes is not intended to reinforce biases (though it may reveal what other people experience). This practice is also not about being judged “positively” or “negatively.” In fact, I think that wearing a costume can help dismantle judgement.
