The Art of Touché – #16 of 50 Things That Help Me Heal (video)

It can be really hard to admit we are not as right as we thought we were. This is a playful way of saying, actually, “you are right.” Which can go a long way in making peace.
Sometimes we find ourselves in an argument and we realize the previous stance we were taking isn’t holding up. In fact the other person is making some “good points.” It can be a challenge to just say:
“I’m wrong.”
“I’m not totally right, you’re right.”
“Your point is the winning point and I agree with you.”
Or, “I don’t agree with you, but you’re right.”
Touché can be a way to interrupt the opposition, reposition and reframe into partnership again, and make space for more sincere communication or clearing up what has now been revealed as a miscommunication.
I have found myself saying recently, “That’s fair.” Or, “You make some good points.” Touché is good when your pride can only muster a single word of deference.
Creating peace! This is all about creating peace!
