In this episode of Vagina Talks, Sophia Wise One talks with Stasha Washburn, The Period Coach, about the unique qualities of each phase of the menstrual cycle and the magic that we can all experience from following its natural energetic rhythm.

Whether or not your body literally bleeds, you can absolutely benefit from listening to the rhythm of the cycle, particularly by following the moon’s cycle.

There are four phases of the cycle: menstrual, follicular, ovulation, and luteal.

PMS is not a phase of the menstrual cycle!

Each of the four actual phases corresponds with a season, winter, spring, summer, and fall. It is sane-making when we schedule our lives and expectations around that ebb and flow these phases.

Stasha speaks to whether you’re bleeding right now or not:

“If you are bleeding, great. The stuff we’ll talk about as far as hormones and how that affects your body and all of that, absolutely will be a thing. But also, for those of you who are not bleeding, this is your opportunity to really tap into your energetic ups and downs. Your full moon, your new moon, your spring, your summer, your winter, your fall, and really embrace the cycle on a monthly basis as well as on a yearly basis.”

Old wisdom + science now, from Stasha:

“Once upon a time, women collected during their menstrual phase, and they brought back messages to the village: what to do next, how we could improve, what could be better. They brought back messages to the village and the entire village honored those messages knowing that during this time, it was a really divine messenger. But, now in science land, we also know that during menstruation, the left and the right hemisphere of the brain — the synapses between those two hemispheres are firing the most!”

Sophia Wise One on the transition into organizing your life around your cycle:

“It has a patience that requires a trust in your own wisdom, as opposed to a patience that requires a trust in something outside of you.”

Anointment with blood from Sophia Wise One:

“The first time I anointed myself, I had been working with essential oils for a really long time. I was going through a breakup and so my heart — the front of my heart — at the time, physically, was hurting. It was my chest, you know? It was physically hurt and I just remember placing, like running some blood down the center of my chest and taking a few deep breaths and then just starting to laugh because the pain was gone.”
